Description

William Masters and Virginia Johnson are known as pioneers of the science of human sexuality. Their research shoots them to fame on a trajectory that takes them from humble beginnings in the Midwest to the cover of Time magazine. Masters is a brilliant scientist who is out of touch with his own feelings. Johnson is a divorced mother who is ahead of her time on many fronts, including her determination to have a meaningful career. The pair's relationship isn't just professional, as it evolves into a three-way "marriage" with Masters' wife, Libby. "Masters of Sex" is based on Thomas Maier's book of the same name, which profiled the pair.

I watched and loved the first two seasons of Masters of Sex a few years ago. As often happens, I forgot about it for a while, which was just as well because it took 3 years to get the next (and final) two seasons on DVD. I was thrilled when this box set was introduced. I devoured the final two seasons in a few weeks. Fortunately, in spite of the delay in my viewing, there was no decline in quality. The show hinges on the chemistry of the two leads, adroitly played by Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan. In other actors' hands, this show could have been seriously creepy, but they handle it masterfully. I loved watching their relationship unfold. That said, the series isn't perfect. There are many subplots that don't work well, and the show seemed to be scrambling at various points. Why do all three of Virginia's children disappear from the narrative? What about Bill's mother? And why the protracted plot contrivance of Danny Logan? I wanted to throw my remote at my screen a few times in season 3. The term "narrative drift" comes to mind.Overall, though, this is an excellent show with top-notch talent. Make some time for it.A little to much nudity for me, but what was I to expect. Totally entertaining. For some reason I never remember this being on TV. It wasn't until I saw it scrolling through TV series that I came across it. I really enjoyed it. Loved all of the actors and couldn't wait to see what happened next as there are many small stories within the story. The personal relationship between Masters & Johnson was so complicated, and at times a bit sick. So much deceit with these two. Virginia Johnson was especially tenacious and cruel by using any means to achieve her desired ends, ( both in the running of the clinic and her personal life). She didn't seem to care who she hurt along the way. I vaguely remember hearing about Masters & Johnson but they were a little before my time. Still, the books are available today so any generation can learn about them.. Michael Sheen (who I love in anything) and LIzzy Caplan were amazing, as were the rest of the cast. Highly recommend it!I have the first two seasons from hunting thru bargain video shops over 3 years, one in San Francisco & one in North Carolina. For what I paid for those 2 acquisitions alone, it was well worth the 4-season set price. I also purchased the Kindle book that the series was based on and find great insights there.Pretty much the only way you can get the later seasons without paying an arm and a leg (or another appendage) to do so. The packaging leaves something to be desired as the discs are just affixed through the center hole to cardboard inserts, they are not in plastic cases, and the 'top' of the 'case' is closed by a detached piece of cardboard.Great show for the era.and the way of thinking at the time. Lots of fun and laughs with regard to sex research of the times and of course, some tasteful rated PG to very light R visuals during some scenes. but is so well done you actually feel like you're there during the early years of the second half of the last century!Fantastic cast entertains. Plenty of drama and intrigue for anybody.Saw the first couple segments on TV. Had to see the rest. Wonderful series.Received these yesterday, and as I always do with new DVD purchases, I took a quick look at several of the discs. All had clear, crisp images and great sound. Not so happy with card board box (reason for the 3 stars) so I transferred them to four regular plastic DVD cases. I will probably start binge-watching them this weekend.I'd watched the first 2 series on TV but the option to show series 3 & 4 were not taken up by anyone in the UK. It's been a few years since 1 & 2 aired so when I bought this I watched from the very start to refresh my memory, not a daunting task by any means. It took me a couple of weeks to watch the whole lot &, just like a good book, it was hard to put down. This is based on the real life struggles of Masters & Johnson to not only be allowed to study human sexuality using volunteers but then get the establishment to recognise their results & publish them at a time when the average American felt guilty for even thinking about sex let alone talking about it at home or worse still in public. Luckily America & the world has moved on from those days so what we have here is a no holes barred drama telling it as it was. The producers could've gone down the route of many film makers cutting away as the sex studies took place with head & shoulders only for the nude scenes but they didn't & quite right too. Most of the numerous cast over the 4 series had their kit off at some point, Lizzy Caplan (Mrs Johnson) leading the way in many episodes & very nice she is too. And talking of the cast there wasn't a weak performance from any of them. I loved Annaleigh Ashford as Betty DiMello who rose from a prostitute participant to practically running the whole setup & Kevin Christy as Lester Linden, the shy naieve bloke who filmed it all. Finally a big shout out to the writer(s) who got this spot on.It was good!No extra fluff, just the video disks in a simple package at a palatable price.Excellent :)!Entertaining series
