Description

Savvy, sexy and full of satire, Sex on the Altar by Wencke Braathen is first in the Adventures of Sam and Emily series that pushes the buttons of religiosity and creates heroes and heroines of a few formidable cultural deities and a hapless, unsuspecting middle-aged couple from Chicago. In this wildly original debut fiction, the author boldly blends genres such as new age fantasy, science fiction, and adventure with the wit and irony of a classic humorist. The thing is, God has a problem. Lack of human devotion has drained the lifeblood form the Queen of Heaven and sucked her into the depths of the Earth. God asks the Ancient Egyptian goddess Isis to help bring her back. With a half smile, Isis knowingly chooses Emily, who develops a relationship with Sam. Through their passion, which is literally a gift from the gods, their love-making awakens the Queen, and the wheels of change are set in motion.

I was at first amused by the interactions of the gods and the humans. Then I was intrigued by how the humans responded to the gods involvement, and a the story developed i enjoyed the view point of seeing reality from a place where all these dimensions are visible and intertwine between each other. The book gives a recipe for healing the most basic ailment of humanity, our stored history in our cells and our conditioned cultural misconceptions towards sexuality. It's refreshing to know that the gods have a healthier disposition, at least the ones we meet in Braathen's book.I loved hearing the opinions of Isis and Mary Magdalene and Virgin Mary as they manifest out of church windows and observe modern life. Their lively conversations certainly expanded my view on these biblical women and made me look at the misconceptions I see around me with new eyes.In this book, the gods suggest that it's time to elevate sex to the the gift of god it was intended as. This could be a trite way of saying make love not war, but in Braathen's sophisticated descriptions, this concept is elevated to an experience of rare beauty which the gods seem to enjoy as well.I truly recommend this book for it's sheer entertainment, as well as it's fascinating ways of delivering big concepts in a light hearted way. It was a joy to read.
